Costa Rica is privileged by nature, with an abundance of biological wealth found in a compact space. Its imposing mountains, valleys, beaches, rivers and two major oceans nurture our spectacular coasts, thus able to combine it all with the friendliness of its people- simple, peaceful and hard-working folks filled with the hope of seeing their children grow in this magical, welcoming land.

Costa Rica stretches from the Pacific Ocean to the Caribbean Sea. It is located in southern Central America, within the planet’s tropical zone, a global zone with incredible biodiversity. With a land area of 51,100 km2, Costa Rica borders to the north on Nicaragua, to the west on the Pacific Ocean, to the east on the Caribbean Sea (Atlantic coast), and to the south on Panama.

Costa Rica has a population of approximately 5,000,000, of which 50% lives in the greater metropolitan area in the country’s central valley at an average altitude of 1,000 meters above sea level.

Costa Rica is a tropical country with two different well-defined seasons: dry and rainy. The main reason for its incredible biodiversity is the proximity of the Pacific Ocean and Caribbean Sea, along with the mountain ranges that separate these two vast maritime zones. Our inhabitants and tourists can travel from one side of the country to the other in just a few hours or from the coast to the mountains in minutes, enjoying a wide and fascinating diversity of microclimates. The average temperature throughout the country is 24°C.

Costa Rica’s 51,100 square kilometers are a haven of life for both flora and fauna. Representing 0.03% of the world’s land mass, the country is considered one of the top 20 countries with the greatest diversity of living species – close to 500,000, accounting for almost 6% of the planet’s biodiversity. Some 25% of its territory is protected in conservation areas or natural heritage reserves, making sustainable development possible. Its natural beauty and wealth are so spectacular that it has merited worldwide recognition.

Free Country

Costa Rica has been a free and independent democratic republic since September 15, 1821. It is a multi-ethnic country whose people, with peasant, Indigenous, African and Spanish roots, have fought to conserve the freedom, peace and sovereignty it enjoys today. For this reason, in 1948 it decided to abolish its army and focus on transcendental issues such as education, scientific research, environmental conservation, ecology and the development of both culture and sports.

Costa Rica is an extremely socially progressive nation; indeed, it is one of Latin America’s most stable and multicultural nations. We have a consolidated democracy, a top-level health care system, an extensive and free educational system, ample public utility coverage, exemplary tourism practices, and capacity for technological development and effective specialized learning – all of which has enabled our people to achieve strong collective growth and better distribution of wealth compared to the size of our economy.
